CHOICE OF WORDS:
Русским обращаться с просьбой, обращаться за чем-либо соответствует ряд слов в английском языке: to appeal, to apply в значении (1.), to consult, to turn to, to go to, to see. Глаголы to appeal и to apply употребляются в официальной речи в отличие от to turn, to go, to see, имеющих более общий, нейтральный характер. Глагол to apply связан с небольшой группой сочетающихся с ним имен существительных, таких как to apply for work (for information, for permission, for help, for a job) обращаться за работой (за информацией, за разрешением, за помощью). В этих сочетаниях глагол to apply предполагает обращение к вышестоящему должностному лицу либо в инстанцию, которая может удовлетворить просьбу. Глагол to appeal имеет эмоциональную характеристику и подчеркивает настоятельность просьбы, направлен к чувствам собеседника и подразумевает надежду на благоприятный отклик; соответственно глагол to appeal сочетается с такими существительными, как sympathy, help, money, sense of duty, feeling, sense of honour. Глагол to consult ограничен характером просьбы. Глагольные сочетания to turn to smb for smth, to go to smb for smth, to see smb about smth нейтральны и часто более выразительны, так как указывают на конкретные действия: to see one's doctor about the desease обратиться к доктору по поводу болезни; to go to one's father for money обратиться к отцу за деньгами; to turn to one's friend for advice обратиться к другу за советом
